Cultura de Irlanda
La isla de Irlanda es famosa por el Libro de Kells, música tradicional irlandesa y escritores tales como Jonathan Swift, Brendan Behan, Douglas Hyde, Flann O'Brien, Sheridan Le Fanu, Sean O'Casey, George Berkeley, James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Oliver Goldsmith, Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker, W.B. Yeats, Samuel Beckett, Séamus Heaney, Herminie T. Kavanagh y otros. Shaw, Yeats, Beckett y Heaney han sido Premios Nobel de Literatura. Ernest Walton compartió el Premio Nobel de Física de 1951 por "partir el átomo".
Figuras culturales irlandesas del tardío siglo XX incluyen a Crhisty Moore, Pat Ingolsbhy, Shane MacGowan y Sinéad O'Connor. En el área del espectáculo se destacan la banda de rock U2, Bob Geldof, Thin Lizzy, Horslips, Rory Gallagher, The Corrs, The Cranberries, Westlife, Chris De Burgh y Van Morrison, en música más tradicional destacan Enya,The Dubliners y The Chieftains entre otros y el espectáculo de danza Riverdance.La danza irlandesa es popular en todo el mundo.
El primer médico con titulación nobiliaria que existió, Sir Hans Sloane, era un médico irlandés cuya afición consistía en la botánica y cuya colección es el núcleo del Museo Británico.
La fiesta nacional es el 17 de marzo, en honor al patrón de Irlanda; San Patricio (Saint Patrick en inglés o Pádraig en irlandés), que fomentó el cristianismo en la isla. Se dice que San Patricio expulsó a las serpientes de Irlanda. El arpa, que aparece en el escudo de la provincia de Leinster y el trébol de tres hojas, también son símbolos con los cuales se identifican a los irlandeses. También se podría hablar del color verde como un color con el que se identifican los irlandeses e inmigrantes alrededor del mundo provenientes de Irlanda. El trébol de tres hojas es símbolo porque se dice que San Patricio lo utilizaba para explicar la Santísima Trinidad.
El día de después de Navidad, el 26 de diciembre, se celebra San Esteban. El 1 de febrero es la fiesta celta del Imbolc, la fiesta de la fertilidad de la Tierra y de la diosa Bríd, la diosa del fuego. Hoy en día, es la fiesta de la Santa Brígida (Saint Brigid en inglés o Bríd en irlandés), el segundo patrón del país. Los irlandeses ponen las cruces de Santa Brigida en sus casas para impedir fuego. Otras celebraciones pre-cristianas conservan sus nombres paganos en irlandés y son el nombre de algunos de los meses del año:Bealtaine (mayo) la fiesta del principio del verano, Lúnasa (agosto) la fiesta de la cosecha y Samhain (noviembre) la fiesta de los muertos y el año nuevo. Esta última, parecida a la fiesta de Todos los Santos.
